SHOW COMMENTS:

John Legend performed Saturday at the Nautica Pavilion and nearly sold out house were not disappointed.

The only downside to the night was the first act on the bill, Vaughn Anthony. Anthony is John Legend's brother and trust me, that is the only reason he is on the bill. Originally a backup singer for his brother, he has tried to venture out on his own and for me, it didn't work. He has a decent voice but does not have the vocal range or the stage presence needed. He even acknowledged "I'm Vaughn Anthony and I am going to do some songs for you whether you like it or not". Well Vaughn, I didn't like the sound, the songs and especially the band playing along with a sound track or the roadie acting as part of the band playing around with a Playstation guitar. It's an insult to your audience.

On the other hand, Indie Arie blew me away. This was the first time hearing her live and feeling the experience of her show. Her vocals and lyrics swept you up and carried you thru the night making her one hour set seem way to short. Highlights for me were her songs "Video", "Therapy" and  "Ghetto" which were enough for me to go out and purchase the CD's (Thanks to Barry Gabel on the suggestions!). Her interaction with the audience with stories about the songs and her presence gave you a comfort like being with an old friend. Definitely recommend seeing her live next time she is in town to all my readers. I'll be there.

I first saw John Legend almost 2 years ago at the Akron Civic Theatre when I actually went to see opening act Corrine Bailey Rae play. I was not a fan at the time as I really did not know his music, but I have to say. I walked out of there a huge fan. His style is a throw back to the old "Sweet Philly Soul" sound of the 60's and 70's. I was so impressed by him last time,I was kind of wondering if this show would hold up for me. No worries there as he opened the show with a beautiful rendition of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" which really showcased his amazing vocals and for the next almost 2 hours he didn't let up. Mixing songs from his current album "Evolver" and going back to the fantastic album "Once Again" and his first "Get Lifted" he hit all the fan favorites. There was not a low point in the whole show but hearing "Save Room", "PDA" and "Slow Dance" live again was special and I have to admit hearing "Green Light" live changed my mind about the song. I loved the energy and the video in the background of Andre 3000 singing his parts made the song jump, where it didn't for me on the CD. It was a fantastic night. Warm weather, lake breezes, and John Legend giving us a night of great music. - Bear (Clevelandrockandroll.com)
